Editor's Notebook: Moscow

In early 2007, I was invited to attend a machine tool trade show in Moscow -- as it turned out, I was one of only two American journalists to attend. I wrote a brief essay for "American Machinist," then wrote a longer piece which I shopped around to an array of publications, but to no avail. I offer that longer article here, in the belief that people should know that the Russian machine tool industry has every intent of competing in the world marketplace. In January 2001, I had the opportunity to interview a remarkable scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, who had developed a novel technique for making a robot "brain." A few years later, Mark Tilden left Los Alamos to develop products for a new company named WowWee Toys.
